HEARING AIDS, HEAT AND HUMIDITY – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
At the Cedar Valley Center for Hearing, we understand that making the most of your summer means you don’t want to miss a beat. That’s why it’s important to understand the effects of heat and humidity on hearing aids. According to Siemens, it’s best to take proper precautions to keep your hearing aids in top working conditions all year long. Here are a few important reminders:
- Avoid leaving hearing aids in direct sunlight. If your hearing aids aren’t waterproof, you might be tempted to remove them and leave them lying on a beach chair or table while you dip in the pool. Hearing aid casings are plastic, and can begin melting if left in strong sunlight for too long. Instead, tuck them into a case out of the direct sunlight and store in a cool, shady place.
- Stay away from extreme heat. Leaving hearing aids in very hot conditions, such as the glove compartment of your car, can cause major damage to casings and batteries. Instead, find a cooler storage option.
- Avoid moisture. Moisture from humidity, being splashed at the pool, or a sudden downpour can cause irreparable damage to hearing aids. Wearing a hat can provide protection when you go outside. Also, try to avoid splash zones and keep your hearing aids stored in waterproof containers if you’re at the beach or poolside. For high humidity, place your hearing aids into a dryer box at the end of the day (note: if you have rechargeable hearing aids, the charger likely comes with a drying function). If you’re outdoors a lot, or live in a humid environment year-round, consider investing in a pair of water-resistant or waterproof hearing aids.
- Prevent chemical damage. Spray-on sunscreen, hair spray, bug spray, or perfume can clog or ruin hearing aids. Before you spray, make sure you take out your hearing aids and place them somewhere safe. If you are concerned anything may have gotten on them despite your best efforts, use your cleaning kit to wipe them down and clear all the vents and openings.
By taking a few simple precautions, you’ll ensure your hearing aids continue to function at peak performance throughout the summer and for years to come. If you believe your hearing aids have suffered from extreme heat and humidity damage, contact the Cedar Valley Center for Hearing at (319) 833-5968 and arrange an inspection.
